VPLS

Any-to-any connectivity - across the U.S.

Introducing Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)

Once again Verizon Business raised the service innovation bar, this time with a nationwide rollout of VPLS. This service combines the flexibility of IP, simplicity of Ethernet, and the reliability of SONET technology. By running a Layer 2 VPN over our carrier-class MPLS backbone, Verizon Business can give your enterprise any-to-any multi-point service.

  • Control IP routing while getting the benefits of MPLS
  • Use bandwidth more efficiently than point-to-point
  • Flexible traffic flow planning using standard classes of services
  • Create the appearance of all your sites on a single Ethernet access circuit
  • Set up only one connection per site—no matter how many locations
  • No learning curve—your Ethernet LAN people can handle it
  • VPLS Flows speeds from 1Mbps to 1Gbps

All sites on the same LAN

VPLS pushes your LAN to the service edge of Verizon Business' renowned network. Our network emulates your LAN switch and bridge functions, meshing all your LANs into a single-bridged, Ethernet LAN, so all your sites appear to be on the same LAN—regardless of location.

Scalable, cost-effective, and flexible

  • Receive multiple VPLS Flows and other Verizon Business product Ethernet Virtual Circuits through a single Ethernet Network Interface (ENI) or port
  • Support literally thousands of sites
  • Run multiple services such as Private IP and Ethernet Private Line on a single access circuit
  • Add or remove locations with little impact to flow attachment circuits
  • Includes 50 MAC addresses per 25 sites in your VPLS domain

Four Classes of Service

Now you can converge all your applications over a single network because VPLS supports four service classes:

  • Real Time Data—premium Quality of Service, ideal for VoIP
  • Priority Data—for mission critical data and video apps
  • Business Data—perfect for transactional data and query-based apps
  • Basic Data—can support general data or applications

And with VPLS, you can even prioritize latency-sensitive applications such as VoIP and video utilizing priority-bits under IEEE 802.1p.

A commitment to cutting-edge service

Verizon Business remains committed to ongoing innovation in the enterprise solutions sector. VPLS is currently available across the U.S. We look forward to expanding our VPLS presence internationally — so you can run your virtual LANs around the world.

Virtual Private LAN Service - How it Works

The Layer 2 Virtual Private LAN Service forwards frames based on Media Access Control (MAC) addresses. Each Bridging Instance learns the MAC addresses contained in the Ethernet frame of the VPLS Flow and forwards traffic across the dedicated Customer Domain based on these learned MAC addresses. This means you don't have to share your routing plans with Verizon Business. In fact, your routing can be completely independent of provider routing.
